Qatar Airways will finally commence flights to Chengdu next month – almost six months after they were initially due to launch.
The airline had intended to start flying to Sichuan’s provincial capital in March 2013, but the global grounding of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner forced Qatar Airways to delay the launch. But on 3 September 2013 the new flights will finally take off, operating three times a week direct from Doha.
“The new service is part of the airline’s commitment to boost services to the Far East and Asia Pacific,” said Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways. “China is one of our key markets and we are excited to further expand our footprint in China, allowing us to provide greater options for business and leisure travellers ready to take advantage of new flights to and from another entry point in China.”
Qatar Airways’ flights to Chengdu will leave Doha every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 0200, arriving at Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport at 1430. The return leg will depart the Chinese city at 0100 every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, getting back into Doha at 0350 the same day. All flights will be operated using a two-class Airbus A330 aircraft with 36 seats in business class and 248 in economy.
Chengdu will become Qatar Airways’ sixth destination in China, following Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Chongqing.
