Queenstown Airport, the gateway to the popular tourist area in New Zealand’s South Island, has been given the green light to expand.
An additional 16 hectares of land adjacent to the existing airport will now be developed.
“This decision allows us all to move forward and progress the development of a truly world-class airport,” said Queenstown Airport Corporation’s chief executive, Colin Keel.
“[It] creates the opportunity to build general aviation precincts away from our closest neighbours and opens up potential for further development, including building a taxiway parallel to the runway.”
The development of a new taxiway is significant, as it will mean that aircraft no longer have to use the main runway for taxiing.
Meanwhile, a major runway upgrade has been completed at Queenstown Airport. The NZ$19.5 million (US$13.7m) project involved widening the runway, resurfacing it and installing airfield lighting to enable night flights.
