Indonesia has abandoned its attempts to recover the fuselage of AirAsia flight QZ8501 from the seabed.
The country’s military said on Tuesday that the operation was now at an end, after efforts to float the aircraft’s fuselage failed.
“The operation has been ongoing for 30 days so the joint team has pulled out. We apologise to the families of the victims. We tried our best to look for the missing victims,” Channel NewsAsia reported a naval official as saying.
Strong currents and the fragility of the submerged wreckage had scuppered attempts to lift the main section of the Airbus A320 from the floor of the Java Sea.
The aircraft’s flight data and cockpit voice recorders have been recovered however, and are being analysed in an effort to determine the cause of the crash. A report is expected to be released this week.
One hundred and sixty-two people lost their lives when flight QZ8501 crashed en route from Surabaya to Singapore on 28 December 2014. Only 70 bodies have been recovered. Bad weather is believed to have been most likely cause of the crash.
