Rates rise, but bargains aplenty – Hotels.com
Hotel room prices in Asia increased by 4 percent in the first half of 2012 increasing the cost of regional travel.
According to the Hotels Price Index (HPI) report by Hotels.com however, some key cities continue to offer competitive rates, while others recorded a slump in ADR.
Bangkok offered the best deal on luxury hotels with an average price of SG$211 per night, while Shanghai experienced the greatest slide in prices, dropping 13 percent in the first half of 2012 to SG$236.
These cities also registered on the Top 10 list of popular overseas destinations among Singapore travellers, with Bangkok in particular displacing Hong Kong as Singaporeans’ favourite holiday destination
“Although Singapore travellers faced price increases in more than half of the international holiday destinations included in the HPI, several popular Asian cities saw significant price falls.
“The continued expansion of low-cost carriers in the region has also provided Singaporean travellers with more cheap flight options.
“Singaporeans are thus extremely well-placed to find a good travel bargain just in time for their year-end getaway,” said Johan Svanstrom, Vice President, Hotels.com Asia Pacific.
The Hotels.com HPI, which was launched in 2004, is based on bookings made on Hotels.com sites around the world and tracks the real prices paid per hotel room (rather than advertised rates) for about 149,000 properties in more than 19,800 locations in over 85 countries.
