Spain has posted a record number of visitors for the first six months of the year.
New figures released by the Spain Tourist Office found more than 34 million international tourists headed to the country from January to July.
July was a record month itself with 7.9 million visitors, up 2.9% year-on-year. The UK accounts for the majority of international tourists with 23.3% of the share, with 3.4% more Brits heading to Spain in July compared to last year.
The Catalonian region was the most popular area with more than 2.1 million tourists (up 3.1%) although is dominated by French visitors.
The Balearics were not far behind with 2m international tourists, up 1.7% and more of a favourable destination for Brits. Other UK favourites including Andalucia saw an 8.5% rise in tourists in July reaching 1m, while the Canary Islands saw a 2.7% increase to 840,000.
Hotel accommodation continues to dominate stays in the country with 60% of holidays, while the rented option or staying with friends and relatives saw a 4.3% boost to take 40% of stays.
The number of package holidays to Spain was up 10.7% in July, although generally during the six months this type of booking declined by 1.3%.
Spain has long been a popular holiday option for British holidaymakers and continues to be popular due to the number of flights and options. More investment into hotels and areas is also helping to maintain interest.
