Global demand for 30- to 120-seat regional passenger jets is set to soar over the next 20 years, according to a new report by Embraer.

The Brazilian planemaker revealed in its latest Market Outlook report that the world would need 6,795 new regional jets between 2012 and 2031, expanding the global fleet of 30- to 12-seat aircraft by 78%, from 4,150 in service today to 7,375 in 20 years’ time. Of the total demand, 53% will be required to replace older aircraft while 47% will be for fleet expansion.

Embraer noted that the “centre of gravity… will move eastward, most notably to Asia”. China is expected to need 1,005 new regional jets by 2031, accounting for 15% of total global demand. Other Asia Pacific countries will need 505 new regional jets.

North American carriers will continue to account for the largest global share however, with the region accounting for 32% of total demand over the next 20 years, with 2,195 new aircraft. Europe will need 1,905 new aircraft, with Latin American airlines requiring 670 and 515 being delivered to carriers in the Middle East & Africa 515.

“[Regional jets] will continue to link low-mid density markets to hubs and to help develop the much needed regional aviation in emerging countries,” the Embraer report stated.
