India’s aviation authorities have grounded aircraft belonging to Air India and GoAir, due to apparent safety breaches.
The Economic Times reports that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has impounded the aircraft for a series “defects”, including loose bolts, bodywork damage and even tatty interiors. A third “non-scheduled operator” also had an aircraft grounded.
“These aircraft would be released only after their owners rectified the defects found. The two airlines and the private operator have also been asked to explain the reasons behind the defects,” a DGCA official was quoted saying.
In the case of Air India, the national carrier was found not to have checked an engine covering on one of its Airbus A320 jets, which was repaired several weeks ago following a dent.
The aircraft’s carpets were also reported to be “damaged and torn”, which could have affected the evacuation of passengers in an emergency, according to DGCA officials.
