Royal Caribbean International has announced plans to reduce check-in time to 10 minutes for its new ship Quantum of the Seas, as part of a large technology announcement made today.
The cruise line has announced that check-in for the ship will be done online before arriving at the port and passengers can upload a selfie as their onboard security photograph.
Passengers will also be able to track their luggage after a RFID tag is placed on the bags, which guests can then track by an app and online.
WOWbands and apps
RFID technology will also be used in new WOWband wristbands that can act as a room key and payment tool, which can all be linked to the Smart Concierge app where passengers can look over and change their restaurant reservations or activities.
Another app named Royal IQ will mean passengers can call or send SMS text messages at a cheaper rate.
Internet speeds will be improved through a partnership with O3b Networks, whose satellites will beam WiFi directly to the ship for access similarly to what passengers would have at home.
Onboard
Royal Caribbean has also announced new technology offerings within the ship itself.
Inside cabins will have large screens that show what is happening outside through a live camera feed.
A new venue named Bionic Bar will have robots as bartenders where guests order via tablets. The Two70 venue has already been revealed that will have six Roboscreens for performances.
Stuart Leven, managing director, Royal Caribbean International said: “Guests onboard our new Quantum class ships will be forgiven for thinking they’ve been transported to the future when they see first-hand all of the incredible technological advancements that have seamlessly been incorporated into the ship and the wider holiday experience. The new technologies make things possible at sea that could never have been done before. The Robot bartenders, RFID luggage tracking devices and Roboscreens, among others, are complete game-changers for the industry and we’re confident that guests will be blown away when they step onboard.”
Quantum of the Seas will launch in November and will be 20% more energy efficient than its current largest ships Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas.
