Royal Caribbean has placed an order for a fifth Quantum-class cruise ship with Germany’s Meyer Werft shipyard.
The new as-yet-unnamed vessel is scheduled for delivery in autumn 2020, when it will join the existing Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, plus Ovation of the Seas, which is due to launch in 2016, and another unnamed ship will is scheduled for delivery in 2019.
“At Royal Caribbean we are focused on continuously improving efficiency and sustainability, and the fifth Quantum class vessel will be clear evidence of this,” said Michael Bayley, president & CEO of Royal Caribbean International. “Of equal importance is our ability to consistently surpass guest expectations, and we are harnessing the power of the latest technology to do so on this ship.”
The 168,666-ton Quantum-class ships are billed as being the most technologically advance cruise ships in the world. They offer 16 passenger decks and have a capacity of 4,180 passengers. One of the most eye-catching features of the ships is the NorthStar observation tower – a glass-walled capsule that extends over the ship’s edge on a 41-metre-long mechanical arm.
As well as the new Quantum-class ships, Royal Caribbean expects to take delivery of at least two more Oasis-class vessels by 2018.
