Royal Caribbean International has taken delivery of the Anthem of the Seas – its 23rd ship and the second in its Quantum series.

The ship was officially handed over to Royal Caribbean on Friday in a ceremony at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, where the vessel was built.

At approximately 168,000 tonnes, Anthem of the Seas will become the joint third largest cruise ship in the world (along with its sister ship, Quantum of the Seas). It will be able to carry 4,180 passengers in 2,090 cabins across 16 decks.

Anthem of the Seas joins Quantum of the Seas in Royal Caribbean’s new Quantum class. A third vessel, Ovation of the Seas, is expected to join the fleet in 2016.

“We’ve always broken the mould with each successive ship we build, and Anthem of the Seas is no different. I would like to thank Bernard and the Meyer Werft team for their ongoing partnership in designing and building awe-inspiring ships with us,” said Royal Caribbean Cruises’ chairman & CEO, Richard D. Fain.

Anthem of the Seas will now set sail to the UK port of Southampton, where it will spend its first season operating cruises to the Mediterranean Sea and Canary Islands. The ship will be officially inaugurated in a ceremony in Southampton on 20 April 2015.

Like the Quantum of the Seas before it, Anthem of the Seas offers a range of innovative guest attractions. These include the North Star aerial observatory – a glass capsule that extends over the side of the ship, more than 90 metres above the ocean. There are also skydiving and surfing simulators, a large indoor sports and entertainment complex, 18 restaurants, plus a series of bars, lounges and theatres.

Following its inaugural European season, Anthem of the Seas will sail to New York in November 2015 for a series of sailings to Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada and New England.
