Princess Cruises has officially launched its latest ship, the Royal Princess, at a star-studded ceremony in Southampton.
The ship, which is owned by Carnival Corporation, was christened by HRH the Duchess of Cambridge and officially become the flagship of the Princess Cruises fleet.
The 3,560-passenger vessel features a number of industry firsts including Princess Live! (a TV studio), SeaWalk and a huge multi-level atrium which shows off many of the ships new dining options.
The Royal Princess will take its inaugural cruise on 16 June 2013, with a ‘Grand Mediterranean’ itinerary.
Speaking at the original Godmother announcement, the line’s CEO and president Alan Buckelew said: “It is a great honour for Princess Cruises that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge has accepted our invitation to become the Godmother to Royal Princess. We are delighted that the Duchess will launch our new ship and can think of no better way to celebrate our company’s British heritage and our commitment to the country.”
The vessel, which arrived in Southampton on 7 June, was given a full musical salute upon sailing into the country’s busiest cruise port.
UK director Paul Ludlow said: “A musical welcome was the perfect way to mark the arrival of Royal Princess into Southampton ahead of the official naming ceremony on Thursday.
“Even the Great British weather could not dampen the spirits of the spectators who lined the shore and came out in their boats to greet the ship.”
