Ryanair has unveiled plans for a major expansion of its operations in Italy.

Having reversed the decision to close its base at Pescara airport last week, Ryanair then announced plans to accelerate its growth in the Italian market in 2017. This includes the launch of multiple new routes, the deployment of new aircraft to Italian airports, and the hiring of hundreds of new Italian staff.

Ryanair’s decision to expand its Italian operations follows the government’s decision to reverse the EUR2.50 (US$2.80) tax increase and to revise the guidelines for Italian airports.

“We are extremely grateful to Prime Minister Renzi and Transport Minister Delrio for taking these initiatives to grow Italian tourism. All of this growth would have been lost to other EU countries if the municipal tax increase had not been reversed, and the airport guidelines had not been redrafted to comply with EU rules,” said Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary.

Ryanair will kick off its Italian expansion strategy straight away, by hosting cabin crew recruitment drive in 10 Italian cities from 30 August to 13 September.

This comes ahead of the airline’s plans to base 10 new aircraft in Italy in 2017, allowing it to launch 44 new Italian routes, including 21 from Rome and Milan and 23 from regional airports. Through these measures, Ryanair expects to carry an extra three million passengers on its Italian routes next year – approximately 10% more than in 2016.

Ryanair currently flies from 26 Italian airports, including Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino.
