Ryanair has warned it would sell its stake in Aer Lingus if its bid to buy the airline is turned down by the European Commission (EC), although it is confident it will go through.
According to the Financial Times, Ryanair is confident regulators will approve its takeover bid of the Irish airline after submitting a ‘remedies package’ which includes situation where other airlines could operate routes to prevent a monopoly.
While chief executive Michael O’Leary and the airline shared its assurance at its annual meeting last week, it also warned Aer Lingus would be broken up if it pulled its 29.9% stake. O’Leary revealed it had received several enquiries over its Aer Lingus stake.
A decision could be made by Christmas although Ryanair was denied a takeover in 2007 by the European Commission for fear of creating dominance on routes between the UK and Ireland.
