South African Airways (SAA) has said it will comply with new regulations in South Africa regarding children travelling to and from the country from October.
From 1 October children travelling with their parents will need to produce an unedited birth certificate that shows the name of both parents. If certificates are not in English it must be accompanied by a sworn translation issued by a competent authority.
If the child is travelling with one parent they must also be able to product a court order or legal papers saying they are the sole guardian; a death certificate of parents that have passed away, or the absent parent must sign a letter of consent no more than three months old from date of travel.
If a child is travelling with adult that is not their parent or alone, the person and/or child must have a letter of consent; copies of the parents’ passports or documents and contact details of parents or guardians.
“These regulations are designed to ensure the safety of children and should thus be welcomed,” said SAA’s spokesperson, Tlali Tlali. “As from 1 October, we will not be able to check in all travellers who cannot produce the necessary documentation in terms of this Act.”
