Sandals’ new hotel on the island of Grenada has had a ‘halo effect’ on the island and helped to raise awareness, the tourism authority has said.

Sharon Bernstein, director of Grenada Tourism Authority told Travel Daily Sandal’s promotion of the island as well as the resort had helped all hotels on the island to grow.

Sports and festivals, along with new hotels, will help to continue its rise in awareness and sales within the UK market, she said.

“The island is particularly excited to host the West Indies vs England cricket match next year as it will boost arrivals and potentially longer trips to the island. We are reminding our trade partners that there are three more weeks in April that clients can still experience not just during that week. There are also lots of activities and events taking place throughout the year,” she said.

These include festivals based on spices and chocolate, which aim to be factual as well as entertaining for visitors.

With arrivals as of July up 16% Bernstein said the island is also aware of needing more bedstock and is welcoming investments for the right type of property. Around 3,000 rooms are looking to be added.
