Sharjah is investing heavily in its tourism and hospitality sector and with several projects already underway. The tourism and hospitality sector in the Emirate is set to undergo dramatic changes in the next few months and years, said Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, director general, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA).

Al Midfa outlined performance of the tourism and hospitality sector in the Emirate and future outlook in the presence of representatives of Sharjah’s hotel industry and other stakeholders.

“Last year, Sharjah received more than 1.7 million international tourists, registering a 11% growth over the previous year. In the first half this year, the Emirate received more than 951,000 tourists, which suggests a significant overall expected increase in tourist numbers in 2013,” he pointed out.

He further added: “The Authority is also undertaking several new marketing projects such as the new corporate and user-friendly tourism portals, a new e-map of Sharjah and new touch-screen applications. Also in the pipeline is a new advertising campaign for the Sharjah tourism industry in 2014.”

This progress has been in sync with the massive investments that have been made in the tourism and hospitality sector by both the Sharjah government and private sector players, Al Midfa emphasised.
