Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport has said air traffic is now operating normally as police surround terror suspects in a town close to the facility.

Knock-on delays are expected to and from the airport as it recovers from earlier disruption when two of its runways closed.

Services were delayed or diverted away from the airport as forces confronted the two major suspects of the Charlie Hebdo shooting on Wednesday. The gunmen are holed up in a building in the town of Dammartin-en-Goele, close to the airport.

In a separate incident a gunman has taken five people hostage in a supermarket in eastern Paris.

The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised tourists to be ‘especially vigilant’ and follow the advice of French authorities.

Security increased at UK-France borders

Security measures were ramped up at UK borders earlier this week following the Charlie Hebdo shooting in Paris on Wednesday.

Extra passport checks have been put in place on Eurostar and ferry services, while freight services have been scanned more frequently.

Police presence was stepped up at London’s St Pancras station where Eurostar departs, and extra UK police are also on duty at the terminal in Paris, as well as Calais.

The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised tourists to take extra care in Paris after three gunmen shot and killed 12 people at the satirical magazine’s offices.

A policewoman was also shot dead south of Paris yesterday (8 January).
