Resorts World Sentosa’s (RWS) new SEA Aquarium and Adventure Cove Waterpark open their doors today (22 November 2012).
The new attractions, which form part of RWS’ new Marine Life Park, add another family element to the 49-hectare integrated resort, which also includes Universal Studios theme park, casinos and six hotels.
SEA Aquarium will be home to 100,000 marine animals of more than 800 species, contained within 45 million litres of water. Comprising 10 different zones with 49 habitats, the aquarium offers views of marine life native to Southeast Asia, the Arabian Gulf and the open ocean, with headline creatures including manta rays, hammerhead sharks and bottlenose dolphins. The centrepiece of the attraction is a huge 36-metre-wide, eight-metre-high viewing window.
“SEA Aquarium offers not only a stunning display of habitats, but also education and conservation programmes in which families and guests can participate. Younger guests will be thrilled to know that we have specially-designed exhibits such as the Discovery Touch Pool, the Lens Aquarium and Floor Aquarium, to provide them up-close encounters with our marine residents,” explained the aquarium’s senior curator, Grant Willis.
The Adventure Cove Waterpark, located next door to the aquarium, features six water slides, a wave pool and a 620-metre-long lazy river that meanders through 14 themed scenes. The waterpark is also the first in the region to feature marine life, with guests given the opportunity to snorkel among tropical fish, or to sign up for ray-feeding and interaction programmes with sharks and dolphins, which will be introduced next year.
“Adventure Cove Waterpark will add a whole new dimension to water-based attractions in the region,” said Edmond Quah, director of park operations at Adventure Cove Waterpark. “We have gathered some of the most exciting and thrilling waterslides, and combined them with educational programmes on some of the ocean’s most inspiring creatures. Guests interacting with the rays, for example, will learn more about the animal from an aquarist. We hope these experiences will move guests to take action to protect the oceans when they leave the park.”
Both the SEA Aquarium and Adventure Cove Waterpark will be open from 10am to 6pm until 7 December 2012, from which date SEA Aquarium will extend its operating hours until 7pm.
