Shanghai Disney Resort has recorded its 10 millionth visitor, less than a year after it opened.
The milestone was reached with a month still to go until its first anniversary on 16 June, and such is the theme park’s popularity that Disney has already revealed plans for its expansion. A new Toy Story Land, similar to the area currently operating at Hong Kong Disneyland, will open in Shanghai in 2018.
The park’s managers hailed the “incredible popularity” of Shanghai Disney Resort with Chinese visitors.
“The resort’s rapidly growing popularity and extremely high levels of guest satisfaction add to our confidence in the growing demand for our attractions and entertainment,” said Philippe Gas, general manager of the theme park.
To mark its first year of operations, Shanghai Disney Resort has embarked on a month-long celebration leading up to its first anniversary on 16 June 2017, including a social media contest and themed dining and merchandise.
In contrast to Shanghai Disney Resort’s popularity, visitor numbers at Hong Kong Disneyland fell 10% to 6.1m last year.
