Sichuan Airlines has set up a new operating base in the northeast Chinese city of Harbin.
The airline, which is part-owned by China Southern Airlines, will now base up to eight of its aircraft at Harbin’s Taiping International Airport, in the capital of Heilongjiang province. It will initially use these jets to launch flights from the city to Beijing and Guangzhou.
Services to Beijing Capital and Guangzhou Baiyun airports commenced on 1 July 2014 and will both operate three times a week, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
The carrier now plans develop Harbin into a regional hub by deploying more Airbus A320 aircraft to the airport. The next phase of expansion will see the launch of direct flight to Shanghai in August.
The move continues the recent expansion of operations at Harbin’s Taiping Airport. Recently, China’s aviation authorities approved the launch of Longjiang Air, a new private carrier that will be based at the hub. Hainan Airlines is also launching a new Harbin-based subsidiary, Heilongjiang Airlines.
Sichuan Airlines currently operates a fleet of 89 Airbus, based in Chengdu, Chongqing, Harbin, Kunming, Hangzhou, Sanya, Beijing and Xi’an.
