Silver Shadow fails health inspection

Silversea Cruises’ Silver Shadow has failed a health inspection while docked in Alaska.
The luxury cruise ship scored 84 during a test last month by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention despite previously never posting a score less than 92.
A ship fails the sanitation test, which is conducted twice a year for each vessel, when its scores less than 86. According to Cruise Critic it is not yet known why the ship failed the inspection.
A statement from the cruise line read: “On June 17, Silversea’s Silver Shadow received an atypical score of 84 during the Vessel Sanitation Program inspection in Skagway. Silversea is deeply disappointed by this specific and only unsatisfactory score and has taken immediate measures to address the issues identified in the inspection report. Following a thorough review of Silver Shadow’s procedures, we have taken the necessary measures to ensure that that standards are the best in the industry.”
Independent auditors Check Safety First said the failing was a “cause for concern” and said all cruise lines should have continuous third party audits to avoid problems developing.
“With cruise holidays increasingly popular and setting sail for more destinations, it is vital that standards reflect the quality of service offered on each vessel,” said Check Safety First’s chairman Steve Tate.
“Cruise holiday companies have come a long way to improve hygiene standards, but this serves as a timely reminder that like hotels on land, cruise companies have a responsibility to ensure that the wellbeing of passengers are a top priority,” he added.
