Luxury cruise line Silversea has announced plans to undertake the biggest fleet-wide refurbishment in its history.

Under the US$170 million project, the Silver Whisper cruise ship, which undertakes the company’s annual world cruise, will go into dry dock by the end of 2016 to undergo a major renovation.

The work will encompass the vessel’s suites and public spaces, including fresh tiling of the swimming pool and new floors in the restaurants. And Silver Whisper’s onboard technology will also be upgraded, with the addition of two satellite antennas set to increase internet speeds and allow guests to watch the new interactive TVs and on-demand movies, which will be available in every suite.

The ship will be ready in time to undertake the company’s 2017 world cruise, which departs on 6 January.

The Silver Wind cruise ship will also enter dry dock in October 2016. Once again, the refurbishment will include the ship’s furniture and furnishings, and technology upgrades with interactive TVs.

Additionally, the pool deck will be completely ripped up and replaced.

Also being revamped in October 2016, the Silver Discoverer expedition vessel will see new furniture in the pool grill area, a redecorated restaurant and renovated lounge areas, including new AV technology and furniture in the Explorer Lounge, where the ship’s lectures and briefings are conducted.

“We are thrilled to be moving ahead with these major refurbishments and look forward to welcoming guests aboard and sharing our unique vision of ultra-luxury cruising,,” said Manfredi Lefebvre, chairman of Silversea. “We pride ourselves on being the reference when it comes to ultra-luxury cruising and this investment reflects our long-term commitment in this regard toward our ships, our guests and our crew.”

Silversea added that further details of the fleet-wide refurbishment “will be communicated in due course”.
