Silversea Cruises has announced it will introduce a third expedition ship to its fleet next year.
Silver Discoverer, previously Clipper Odyssey, is to undergo a refurbishment in an undisclosed Asia shipyard before entering the Silversea fleet in March 2014.
The ship will have space for up to 128 guests and will have 87 crew and 11 expedition staff onboard. It will be the cruise line’s third vessel in the expedition arena with facilities to include 12 Zodiacs for excursions; a glass bottom boat and the Hot Rocks outdoor grill.
Speaking at the launch in London today, Conrad Combrink, director expedition cruises at Silversea said it was the destinations that would set the vessel apart, which include untouched and remote areas of the Pacific Ocean and Russian Far East.
“Sending our customers to the destinations like the Russian Far East is very exciting for me as these are unspoilt and unique locations that give them the chance to see the remote tribal societies and cultures. We have to work with very traditional leaders in these countries to get permission and introduce people to their culture,” said Combrink.
“We are really trying to go back to the grass roots level of expedition with unknown destinations. These are places that people have been to before, but none of our competitors go there and we will be the first company to go back to them in a long time.”
Locations included in the itineraries will include the remote areas of Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia, Russian Far East, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and the Kimberley area of Australia.
Combrink told Cruise News the new ship is able to offer a “genuine and refreshing” experience by allowing guests to immerse themselves in culture.
“I would prefer to find destinations where we can keep the experience real for our passengers where they can eat the food and see the festivities and immerse themselves into something that isn’t staged. Silver Discoverer allows us to achieve that; it is so genuine and refreshing,” he explained.
Discoverer’s first itinerary will depart from Bali on 1 March 2014 on a 17-night journey with the Komodo Island and Lamalera.
Silversea is also on track to receive its second expedition ship Silver Galapagos in three weeks. When Discoverer is delivered the cruise line will have a total of eight ships.
