In its latest report on membership development, travel and tourism association, Skal International, has announced strong growth in the Asian area. The report, which will be presented today to Skal Asia President, Hulya Aslantas, and the Asian area board at the 38th Skal Asian Area Congress in Incheon, South Korea, shows Skal’s Asian membership standing at 2,514 industry professionals – a 14% rise from last year.
The Asian area now comprises 13% of Skal’s total worldwide membership of 19,478, which includes 318 Young Skal members. Skal International anticipates that membership will grow by 14-18% in 2009 in the Asian area dependant on the number of new clubs opened. There currently plans for four new clubs: Jakarta, Narita, Rodrigues and Puerto Princess.
Andrew Wood, President of Skal International’s Bangkok chapter, said that Skal has a significant role to play in the region, especially in relation to the current challenges faced by the tourism industry.
“I believe we have to recognise and acknowledge that tourism provides economic stability and growth and, quite frankly, our voice needs to be heard more often and more forcefully,” said Wood.
