A Japanese think-tank has visited London Southend Airport to hear how privately-owned airports are operated, after the country relaxed its airport ownership rules.
The Essex airport has been sharing tips with Shingo Mochimaru from leading Japanese think-tank Nomura Research Institute which he will report back to the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT).
The Japanese government has turned to the airport for advice as it opened up legislation that allows its state-owned airports to be privatised.
London Southend Airport was recently announced the ‘Best in Britain’ by consumer organisation Which?.
Mochimaru, pictured here with Stobartair’s chief executive Roger Clements (left) and operations director David Lister (right), appeared positive about the information he received from the Essex airport.
“It has been incredibly instructive for us to hear all about how a private and public partnership can work so successfully, and I know that the story of London Southend Airport will give a great deal of confidence and encouragement to our authorities back home in Japan as they embark on their ambitious development,” Mochimaru said.
