SpiceJet has launched a new booking option that allows passengers to increase the amount of hand baggage they can carry.

The airline currently allows passengers to carry up to 7kg of hand baggage free of charge. But under the new ‘Carry More Onboard’ initiative, SpiceJet will offer up to 12kg of cabin baggage for a price of INR250 (approx. US$3.90) per extra kg. The maximum dimensions of hand baggage still apply.

“Until now, passengers who had heavier than 7kg carry-on bags were forced to check them in, which benefited neither them nor us,” said Sanjiv Kapoor, SpiceJet’s chief operating officer. “Many of our passengers, especially corporate travelers, told us they’d be willing to pay a small fee for the option of carrying slightly heavier bags onboard.

“With the launch of “Carry More Onboard” we are giving passengers… a choice that will be valued by those who prefer to keep their carry-on bags with them, as well as by those who do not want to wait for their carry-on bags at baggage claim,” he added.

The new service launched on 10 July and will be available on both domestic flights and international services originating in India.
SpiceJet’s free cabin baggage allowance of up to 7kg remains unchanged.
