SpiceJet will celebrate its 10th anniversary tomorrow.
The low-cost carrier launched its first commercial flight between New Delhi and Ahmedabad on 23 May 2005. And despite some difficult times, SpiceJet is remains one of India’s leading airlines today, operating 245 daily flights to 41 destinations, including seven international cities, using a fleet of 20 Boeing 737 and 15 Bombardier Q400 aircraft.
SpiceJet has introduced several new initiatives to India’s aviation industry in its time; it was first LCC to offer dedicated extra legroom seats in a separate cabin, and among the first Indian budget airlines to offer hot meals for sale onboard.
“When SG101 took off from Delhi bound for Ahmedabad on May 23 2005, the iPhone was still two years away, Twitter was still a year away, and Facebook and YouTube were new-born babies,” said Sanjiv Kapoor, SpiceJet’s chief operating officer. “In that sense SpiceJet was one of the new breed of ventures – young, dynamic, different, friendly and approachable and with a sense of humour.
“Ten years later, our DNA remains the same, which is why we are the warmest, friendliest, trendiest, and most fun airline in India today. Through ups and downs, the SpiceJet passion and spirit has never dimmed,” he added.
SpiceJet’s future was in doubt at the end of last year, when financial difficulties forced it to ground part of its fleet. But in the last few months the airlines has started expanding again; recently SpiceJet unveiled plans to add a series of new domestic flights for the summer season, as well as ramping up is operations at Kochi International Airport.
