SpiceJet opens up India’s northeast with new flights

SpiceJet has unveiled plans for a series of new flights to India’s remote northeastern states.
From October 2016, the low-cost carrier will use its fleet of Bombardier Q400 aircraft to launch flights to three brand new destinations: Silchar in the state of Assam, Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Aizawl, the state capital of Mizoram.
The new triangular Kolkata-Silchar-Guwahati route will operate daily, as will the new Kolkata-Aizawl-Guwahati service. The airline will also introduce a new Kolkata-Gorakhpur-Delhi service, as well as additional frequencies on the Kolkata-Bagdogra and Kolkata-Guwahati routes.
SpiceJet said it intends to “penetrate the underserved markets within its domestic network and… enhance regional connectivity”.
Sarbananda Sonowal, the Chief Minister of Assam, thanked SpiceJet’s chairman & managing director, Ajay Singh, for launching the new flights. “Your decision to enhance air connectivity between northeast and other parts of the country will serve as a fillip to the tourism potential of Assam and other northeastern states,” he said.
Shilpa Bhatia, SpiceJet’s senior vice president of commercial, commented; “Enhancing the country’s regional connectivity has always been a prime focus for SpiceJet, and with the new aviation policy in place, there is an added encouragement to enter the underserved markets.
“[The] northeast, despite being a crucial tourist locale, has been deprived of good air connectivity. Hence, our new schedule lays special attention on this region, connecting the major hub-points of the seven sister states. And we look forward to further strengthen our presence in this market in the near future.” she added.
The new flights are now open for sale.
