Star Cruises has unveiled plans to homeport one of its ships in the Chinese city of Xiamen.
From 9 October 2013, SuperStar Gemini will become the first Star vessel to be based in the Fujian province city, from where it will operate a series of voyages to ports in Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines.
The inaugural ex-Xiamen cruise aboard the SuperStar Gemini will be a five-night voyage to Penghu, Kaohsiung and Hong Kong, commencing on 9 October. Following this on 14 October, the ship will make a six-night trip from Xiamen to Boracay and Manila.
Another five-night itinerary, departing on 20 October, will call at Penghu, Keelung, Taichung and Kaohsiung.
“Star Cruises has been calling into China since 1994,” said Star’s chief operating officer, William Ng. “With Xiamen being our homeport for SuperStar Gemini, we’re pleased to take Chinese customers on cruise holidays to destinations in Taiwan, Boracay and Manila. As a pioneer and leader of the Asia Pacific cruise industry, Star Cruises has never stopped introducing new routes and setting new itineraries in the region. We believe these itineraries will energise local tourism and attract both new and our regular cruisers. We look forward to developing more Xiamen-based itineraries in close partnership with the local government.”
The 1,530-passenger SuperStar Gemini is currently based in Shanghai, sailing to ports in Taiwan and South Korea. It offers amenities specially designed for Chinese tourists, including a casino, karaoke lounge, mah-jong room and a 450m² duty free shopping area.
