Starwood Hotels & Resorts has signed an agreement to manage a new-build Westin resort on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Scheduled to open in 2021, the Westin Coolum Resort & Spa will be located next to Yaroomba Beach and will form part of a new mixed-use development also featuring retail outlets and luxury apartments.

Starwood said it would work closely with the project’s developers, Sekisui House Australia, in the planning and design process. Once open, it will become Westin’s first resort property in Australia.

“The Westin brand is enjoying phenomenal growth both due to its innovative wellness offerings and lifestyle,” said Sean Hunt, Starwood’s vice president for the Pacific. “By the time it welcomes its first guests, the Westin Coolum Resort & Spa will be the first new-build five-star hotel to open on the Sunshine Coast in 27 years, supporting tourism growth and providing significant employment opportunities to the community.”

Positioned less than 200 metres from the sea and with direct access to the beach, the new Westin will offer 220 rooms and suites, four F&B outlets, a spa with six treatment rooms, swimming pool, kids’ pool, fitness centre and children’s club. It will also provide 850m² of event space, including a ballroom and wedding chapel.

“The Sunshine Coast accommodation market continues to get stronger and the timing of the Westin Coolum Resort & Spa is perfect given the growing visitor numbers and appeal of this destination, especially with the proposed expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport, which continues to gather momentum,” said Andrew Taylor, Starwood’s director of acquisitions & development for the Pacific. “It’s a great time to invest in the region and this is the perfect location for Westin’s first resort-style property in Australia.”

Starwood currently operates Westin hotels in Sydney and Melbourne, and is planning to launch the upscale brand in Brisbane and Perth, as well as the Sunshine Coast, in the coming years.
