Sunny weather in the UK and Europe has seen camping website Pitchup.com increase its business four-fold since last summer.
The website, which is marking its fourth anniversary this year, has seen 1.9 million visits throughout June and July compared to the same period in 2012, with the booking value up 309%.
In the last week the site has seen 5,000 bookings alone with 38% of its sales for stays the next week.
Explaining the reasons behind the last minute trend, Pitchup’s managing director Dan Yates said: “Inflation and tight household budgets have affected overseas travel, but the main reason UK travellers are booking later than ever is because they can: technology we all own enables us to check the weather on a Friday morning and make a decision to book a weekend away there and then. This extreme spontaneity is a newly-observed trend and is set to endure given the ease with which customers can check the forecast and book, all from their mobile devices.”
Yates added traditional camping and caravanning continue to be the most popular options and has been a favoured holiday choice due to its value.
