Passengers on ships, aircraft and trains will soon be able to use superfast broadband speeds in the UK, following a decision by Ofcom today.
The approval means transport operators could use satellite-based technology to provide internet services in the future, providing internet speeds 10-times faster than what is available now.
Ofcom has also approved the use of ‘earth station’ devices on moving vehicles to provide the service.
Passengers are expected to first see the benefits in the late summer, with business travel companies amongst those pleased of the development.
“We’re delighted that Ofcom has licensed super-fast broadband on the UK’s planes and trains. Today’s news promises to make the lives of regular business travellers easier as well as more comfortable, enjoyable and productive,” said Isabel Montesdeoca, managing director of Concur in the UK. “However, we urge travel companies to offer access to super-fast wi-fi as standard, not as an additional charge.”
