More than 20 people have been killed in a terrorist attack at Karachi Airport.
According to local media reports, terrorists armed with automatic weapons, grenades, bombs and rocket launchers attacked the old terminal at Jinnah International Airport, killing 11 people and injuring 14.
Most of those killed were members of the Airport Security Force (ASF), but the BBC reported that airline staff were also among the dead. At least terrorists were also killed in the attack, after Pakistani armed forces engaged the attackers in a gun battle.
Three large explosions were heard during the attack, and large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the airport. Earlier reports that three aircraft, including one belonging to Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), were damaged have since been denied.
The fighting was focused on the airport’s cargo terminal, but all operations at the airport have been suspended with flights being diverted to other airports.
The Pakistan Taliban has taken responsibility for the attack.
