Thai Lion Air, the Bangkok-based subsidiary of Indonesia’s Lion Air, will launch its first flight to mainland China later this month.

The Bangkok Post reports that the low-cost carrier will inaugurate a new daily direct service between Bangkok and Guangzhou on 28 October 2016. Flights will run from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport using a Boeing 737 aircraft.

Thai Lion will be entering a highly competitive market however; it will become the ninth airline serving the Bangkok-Guangzhou route, following China Southern, Royal Jordanian, Kenya Airways, Shenzhen Airlines, Spring Airlines, SriLankan Airlines, Thai AirAsia and Thai Airways.

China will become the fifth country on Thai Lion Air’s route map, following Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar and Indonesia. And a sixth could also be added in the near future, with daily flights to Vietnam’s largest city, Ho Chi Minh City, expected to start in November.
