Thailand’s flourishing tourism industry has been given another considerable boost following the decision to base a major international cruise ship in Bangkok.
Italy’s Costa Cruises has commenced its first ever homeport season in the Thai capital’s Laem Chabang port, which will see the 2,394-passenger Costa Victoria operate a series of cruises around the Gulf of Thailand. The company said the move reflected its “commitment to build the cruise market in the region”.
“As one of the cruising pioneers in Asia Pacific, Costa Asia is excited to expand into Thailand by launching its first homeport cruises from Laem Chabang,” said Buhdy Bok, Costa’s president for Asia.
“Guests based in Thailand can now embark and disembark from right at their door-step for short cruises, enabling them to enjoy our unique ‘Italy at Sea’ experience. We believe in the long-term potential of Thailand as a sourcing and destination market,” he added.
The Costa Victoria arrived in Bangkok on 11 January 2017, following a voyage from Singapore. Between now and 25 January the ship will operate a series of three four-night cruises around the Gulf of Thailand, including stops in Koh Samui, the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville and the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc. It will then sail up to China on a four-night cruise.
