Minor Hotel Group has expanded its presence in Africa following a significant investment in a hotel and mixed-use complex in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo.

The Bangkok-based company, which already operates its Anantara and Avani brands in Mozambique, has invested approximately US$101 million to acquire 49% of a new project in Maputo, consisting of an existing 154-key Radisson Blu hotel, plus a 187-unit residential tower and a 21-storey office tower, both of which are under construction.

The project, facing Maputo Bay, is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.

“Minor Hotel Group’s continued investment with [joint venture partner] Rani [Investment LLC] demonstrates absolute confidence in our strategic partnership, as well as in Mozambique’s growth prospects,” said Dillip Rajakarier, CEO of the Minor Hotel Group.

“With our added presence in Maputo, Minor Hotel Group now has investments from the north all the way to the south of Mozambique. Minor Hotel Group’s expertise in the hotel and real estate industry, combined with Rani’s business expertise and network in Mozambique, will help ensure the effective execution of these properties and new developments.”

Minor entered Mozambique in 2013, with the launch of the Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort & Spa, and has recently rebranded two further properties – Avani Pemba Beach Hotel & Spa and Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort & Spa. It will also launch the Anantara Matemo Island Resort & Spa in 2015.
