The Love Boat cast named Regal Princess godparents

The original cast of the US TV show The Love Boat have been announced as the godparents for the new Regal Princess.
The godparents are the six main characters from the show, which ran from 1977 to 1987, namely: Gavin MacLeod, who played Captain Stubing; Fred Grandy, Gopher the chief purser; Ted Lange, Isaac the bartender; Bernie Kopell, Doc; Lauren Tewes, Julie the cruise director and Jill Whelan, Vicki the Captain’s daughter.
They will name the new Princes Cruises ship at its christening in Fort Lauderdale on 5 November, after which the Regal Princess will start its maiden season in the Caribbean.
The ceremony will also kick-start celebrations for Princess Cruises’ 50th anniversary in 2015.
The Love Boat ran for 10 seasons and was mostly set onbaord Princess Cruises ships, helping to raise the profile of cruising.
Paul Ludlow, Princess Cruises’ managing director UK and Europe, said: “It’s fitting that Regal Princess will be named by The Love Boat cast as the event will perfectly mark the past and future of Princess Cruises. The show was key to our success and the cast are a great choice to help kick-start our anniversary celebrations.”
Regal Princess started to sail in May and is sister to Royal Princess which was launched last year by HRH the Duchess of Cambridge. It is Princess’ 18th ship and has capacity for up to 3, 560 guests.
