Thomson is to trial Google+ hangouts and Twitter hashtags to act as online reps for its customers.

The company is to use Google+ hangouts, similar to video conferencing calls, to welcome customers prior to their departure and will then promote a Twitter hashtag that they can use while in resort. It hopes the mediums will encourage travellers to meet each other ahead of a trip and find out information about their resort before arrival.

It will first be tested by travellers heading to Sensatori Resort Crete this month, with staff, or iAdvisors, carrying tablets throughout the resort so they are kept updated. If successful, Thomson plans to roll out the scheme across its Sensatori resorts.

“We’re always looking for innovative and unique ways to deliver the best experience for our customers,” said Ian Chapman, director of holiday experiences for Thomson. “Using Google+ Hangouts and Twitter hashtags is the perfect way to share our team’s outstanding local knowledge and experience, but in a way that appeals to our more tech savvy customers.”
