Tibet Airlines will take delivery of its first ever twin-aisle aircraft this summer, in preparation for the launch of international flights.
The Lhasa-based carrier, which is part-owned by Air China, will welcome its first Airbus A330 in June 2016.
Initially, this aircraft will be deployed on key domestic routes linking Lhasa’s Gonggar Airport with destinations including Chengdu and Shanghai. The airline’s first international route will then commence later in the year.
While the exact destinations being planned by Tibet Airlines have not been confirmed, the airline is believed to be keen to fly to South Asia, Southeast Asia and even Europe. The airline’s new Nepalese subsidiary, Himalaya Airlines, launched its first flights to Colombo, Delhi and Doha this month.
Tibet Airlines commenced operations in July 2011 and currently operates 15 Airbus A320-series jets on domestic routes to major Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Hangzhou and Nanjing. As well as the A330, the airline plans to introduce three more A320s by the end of 2016.
