Brisbane will become Tigerair’s third Australian base when operations launch at the Queensland hub in March and April 2014.
The low-cost carrier will base two new Airbus A320 aircraft at Brisbane International Airport, adding around 800,000 additional seats per year from the city. The new hub will join Tigerair’s existing bases at Melbourne and Sydney.
As part of the deployment, Tigerair will commence three new routes from Brisbane, flying to Darwin, Cairns and Adelaide.
“This is a significant milestone for our airline, which is embarking on its future Australian expansion as planned,” said Tigerair Australia’s CEO, Rob Sharp. “Our network decisions are a result of extensive analysis and are always based on consumer demand. We believe that our announcement today begins to address an underserved budget market.
“Budget travel options at Brisbane have lagged behind other major airports and our announcement today is designed to address this.
Historically, budget travel has accounted for only 19% of Brisbane’s overall airport capacity, against 33% and 26% respectively in Melbourne and Sydney. We are responding to this demand for budget travel. Our fares have been proven to stimulate markets and we strongly believe in the potential this new base presents,” he added.
Following the launch of Tigerair’s Brisbane base, Queensland will account for 59% of the LCC’s total capacity.
Tigerair has also announced plans to develop new technological innovations at Brisbane Airport, including trials of automated baggage drop technology and self-service check-in kiosks.
In addition to the launch of flights between Brisbane and Adelaide, Tigerair has also launched a new route between Sydney and Adelaide.
