Tigerair Taiwan could soon spread its wings to mainland China, having applied for permission to launch its first cross-Strait routes.
The new low-cost carrier, which commenced operations in September 2014, is one of several Taiwanese airlines being considered to operate six new weekly cross-Strait flights on two new routes.
Tigerair will compete with its parent company, China Airlines, and EVA Air and its subsidiaries, for the right to operate scheduled flights to two new mainland Chinese destinations – Changzhou in Jiangsu province and Jieyang in Guangdong province.
In September, Taiwan and China agreed to add 12 weekly cross-Strait flights to the two destinations, half of which will be operated by Taiwanese carriers. This means that there will be three weekly flights to Changzhou and three to Jieyang.
If Tigerair is awarded the routes, it will become only the second low-cost carrier to fly between Taiwan and China, following Shanghai-based Spring Airlines, which operates to Taipei and Kaohsiung.
The extra allocations will take the total number of weekly cross-Strait flights to 840.
Tigerair Taiwan currently operates scheduled services to Singapore, Bangkok and Chiang Mai using a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.
