The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has unveiled a new tourism campaign that is intended to make the Japanese capital the “world’s number one tourist destination”.

Launched ahead of the city’s hosting of the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics, the new “& TOKYO” campaign will be rolled out both domestically and overseas, and includes a new tourism logo and slogan. A new campaign website, andtokyo.jp/en, has also been created.

The government said it aims to position Tokyo as “a city that promises all kinds of fun by constantly generating new styles while bringing tradition and innovation together.”

“From here on, we hope that more Tokyo residents and private businesses will participate in the Tokyo brand promotion campaign, coming together as one to promote the city’s diverse values, as well as its fun-filled days packed with new discoveries and experiences that can only be had here. Through this, we will ultimately aim to create even more fans of Tokyo all over the world,” the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said in a statement.

But Tokyo still has some way to go if it wants to become the world’s most popular tourist destination. According to MasterCard’s 2015 Global Destination Cities Index, the Japanese capital will welcome 8.08 million visitors this year, making it the world’s 11th most visited city. London tops the list with 18.82m visitors.
