Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways has taken delivery of the first in a series of new aircraft that will transform its domestic fleet.

The carrier collected the new ATR 72-600 turboprop plane in a ceremony in Toulouse on Thursday, marking the first delivery of an order for 12 aircraft. All deliveries are expected to be completed within two years, with new 72-seat ATRs being rolled out on TransAsia’s domestic routes.

“TransAsia welcomes the arrival of the first of 12 ATR 72-600s,” said Vincent Lin, TransAsia’s chairman. “We are ready to further expand our regional offering and to support the addition of new routes and frequencies on existing routes. The introduction of our new planes will support this growth.”

The first new aircraft will be deployed on the route from Taipei Songshan Airport to Magong, an island off Taiwan’s west coast.

TransAsia currently operates a fleet of 21 Airbus and ATR aircraft, but plans to expand this significantly with outstanding orders for at least 25 more aircraft.
