Turkish Airlines buys 117 new aircraft
Turkish Airlines has signed a deal with Airbus to purchase up to 117 A320-series aircraft.
The deal, which is approximately US$13 billion at list prices, will see Turkish take delivery of 25 A321, four A320neo and 53 A321neo aircraft, with options for 35 additional A321neos. The neo series is the new engine version of the classic single-aisle A320 model, which is designed to be more fuel-efficient.
“We are placing our biggest ever order with Airbus,” said Faruk Cizmecioglu, Turkish Airlines’ chief marketing officer. “The A320 family, with its economic benefits combined with superior cabin comfort, will greatly contribute to meet our ambitious growth plans.”
Turkish already operates 75 A320-series aircraft and the latest order continues the airline’s rapid recent fleet expansion. It also has outstanding orders for 17 A330-300s, 20 Boeing 737s and 15 B777-300s.
The latest order also becomes the largest single order in the history of Turkish aviation, eclipsing the 100 A320s ordered by Pegasus Airlines in December 2012.
