Two million people will be booking a holiday this week to escape the January blues, according to ABTA.

With the week starting with Blue Monday to reflect the ‘most depressing day of the year’, this third week is expected to be the busiest for Brits taking advantage of early booking discounts. USA, Australia and New Zealand are amongst dream destinations although Mediterranean resorts are set to be popular as outlined in a Post Office report last week (see TDUK 16/01/12).

“With two 4 day weekends in the first half of 2012 (Easter and the Diamond Jubilee) many people are expected to take advantage of the time off work and go abroad,” said Victoria Bacon, head of communications at ABTA.

Some companies have already posted healthy sales for January, including Travel Counsellors, which saw its record sales day on Friday 13th. Two thousand people booked holidays with the homeworker company on the supposedly unlucky day.

Meanwhile as domestic tourism is also set to pick up this year, VisitEngland has revealed that UK holiday trips taken in England increased 5% from January to September in 2011 compared to the same period last year.  Holiday spend also increased during the same period by 11%.
