Hotels in the UK are driving forward growth in performance during this year’s first quarter compared to last year.
New statistics from STR Global has found the UK has the fullest hotels in Europe with an occupancy of 73.9% in March this year, 3.6% more than in March 2013.
The UK also saw the largest increase in average daily rate (ADR) with a rise of 6.3% to GBP79.46, while RevPAR was up 10.2% to GBP58.71.
In comparison the second best performing country was Germany with a 3.1% rise in occupancy to 65.4%; ADR up 1% and RevPAR up 4.1%.
Continent-wide hotels in Europe had an average occupancy of 64.9%, up 2.2% year-on-year.
“Occupancy and average daily rate during the first quarter performed on par in the region”, said Elizabeth Winkle, managing director of STR Global. “Of the sub-regions, Northern Europe reported double-digit revenue-per-available-room growth in both March and throughout the first quarter. The UK, Lithuania and Denmark are driving this growth with strong first-quarter performance.”
Its city breakdown showed double-digit ADR growth with Manchester’s rates up 13.2% to GBP71.20 and London’s up 10% to GBP130.47.
Athens, Copenhagen and Vilnius also experienced increases in rates while Istanbul and Prague suffered the largest dips.
