The UNWTO has hailed the success of a project in Indonesia designed to support tourism and fight climate change.
The ‘Sustainable Tourism through Energy Efficiency with Adaptation & Mitigation Measures’, or STREAM project, has been working to implement new renewable energy tourism projects in Pangandaran, Sumatra, which was devastated by the 2006 tsunami.
Along with Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism & Creative Economy, the UNWTO has developed a new Low Carbon Planning Software Tool that helps local tourism operators develop low carbon tourism in the area. Local energy projects have included solar powered boats and locally produced bamboo bikes.
“For tourism, climate change is not a remote event, but a phenomenon that already affects the sector,” said Márcio Favilla, UNWTO executive director for operational programmes & institutional relations.
“Seeing the results achieved by STREAM, it stands clear that this project is an exceptional example of how tourism can be an effective tool in the fight against climate change, protecting natural resources while leading to inclusive development of local communities and fruitful cross-sector cooperation.”
The STREAM project also included rehabilitation programmes to restore and protect Pangandaran’s mangrove forests and coral reefs.
