An Air India flight en route to the US was forced to make an emergency landing on Thursday after a fire alarm went off in the cargo hold.

The Economic Times reports that the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, which can carry up to 342 passengers, had to make an unscheduled landing in Kazakhstan during the incident.

The airline itself only revealed that the landing was made for “operational reasons”, but the newspaper cited a source as revealing the fire alarm as the cause. It is unclear whether there was actually a fire.

The aircraft had taken off from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at around 0230 on 25 August and had been due to arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport at around 9am.

The passengers were delayed, but an Air India executive was reported saying that everyone was safe.
