Brand USA has teamed up with United Airlines to host its first-ever mega fam trip for Chinese tour operators.

The event, which took place from 19-27 October 2016, saw operators from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xian, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wenzhou and Chongqing travel to a series of key US destinations, including New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and many locations further afield.

“We’ve been working with our partners for some time to host a familiarization tour of qualified tour operators from China as part of the US-China Tourism Year strategy,” said Thomas Garzilli, chief marketing officer for Brand USA. “The mega fam provided top travel industry professionals, from locations throughout China, the opportunity to experience the United States to, through, and beyond gateway cities.”

US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping met in September 2015 to confirm US-China Tourism Year. In February 2016, Brand USA worked with the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and the US Department of Commerce to launch the Tourism Year with a gala in Beijing, as part of Brand USA’s first-ever sales mission to China. The tourism marketing board has since introduced a new online toolkit for Chinese tour operators and agents.

The US welcomed nearly 2.6 million visitors from China in 2015, up 18% year-on-year and making it the country’s fifth-largest international source market.

The China mega fam trip culminated with a grand finale event hosted by Visit California at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
