VietJet Air has taken the first step on a journey that will allow it to target the lucrative Russian outbound market.
The Vietnamese low-cost carrier recently penned an agreement with Vladivostok International Airport that will pave the way for the launch of direct flights to Vietnam from Russia’s Far East.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on 6 September 2014, during the 17th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for Vietnam-Russia, which aims to foster bilateral trade.
The number of Russian travellers to Vietnam has surged in recent years. Russia is already Vietnam’s largest European source market, and in the first eight months of 2014 more than 240,000 Russian tourists visited Vietnam, up 28% year-on-year.
Currently Russian carriers, including Nordwind Airlines, operate seasonal charter flights between Vladivostok and Vietnam, but VietJet would be the first Vietnamese airline and the first low-cost carrier to serve the Russian city.
And VietJet said it would also use the services to offer Russian travellers a greater range of connections to Southeast Asia.
“A new route connecting Vietnam and Russia will undoubtedly boost trade relations and tourism flows between the countries,” the LCC said in a statement.
“Besides planning new routes linking Vladivostok to popular hubs in Vietnam, VietJet will continue to expand its network throughout the ASEAN region. VietJet is already in a position to offer Russian tourists connecting flights to Singapore, South Korea and Thailand from Vietnam and more destinations will soon be added, including a flight to Siem Reap,” it added.
All of VietJet’s flights are operated using 180-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.
